Several years ago, one of my sons (Brian) was a freshman in high school. One day he said he wanted to work on an old pickup truck so that when he turned 16, he would have something to drive. When I asked him what kind of truck was he thinking about, you guessed it, an old Dodge flat fender PW. Beats me how he even knew about them since we live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Brian painted Power Wagons in art class, made Power Wagon buckles in metal shop, wrote his history paper on Power Wagons and I'm sure Power Wagons worked their way into math class. One day he showed me an ad for a Power Wagon. It was up in Oregon and owned by Herb Hobi. Brian told me it was a great deal and we were going to really miss out if we didn't get it. I laughed and soon our house was filled with copies of Herb's PW taped everywhere, even in our cars. So one day I called Herb and after he assured me it would be a great project and that he could trailer it down in a month or so, I said fine. I figured I would surprise Brian so I cut a check and sent it. The next day it dawned on me that I forgot to mention all of this to my wife. As the days rolled by I was at a loss as to what I would say. Eventually the delivery day arrived. That morning I told my wife "that I did something really bad". With a horrified look on her face, she asked what. She went into a state of shock when I told her. That afternoon I asked her to pick Brian up from school since I didn't want to miss Herb if he arrived. As soon as she was gone, Herb rolled up. When my wife and Brian came back, Herb was driving the PW down the street, into our driveway. Brian jumped out before the car even stopped with the biggest grin on his face. For the next several weeks, he would drive the truck back and forth in the drive. At one point, he put it up on jacks so he could practice shifting. That was 5 years ago. Along the way he decided to rebuild the truck, so it along with all the parts live in our garage. Brian still works on it and my wife is still with me and occasionally will talk to me.
