If it's a 1500 it's too light, most likely 6500lbs, however, look for signs of the factory towing package, such as a Bargman plug, 7 pin, electrical hook-up, frame mounted tow hitch, etc.
A factory tow package would have had a HD alternator, radiator, trans cooler, HD flasher and a few other goodies that would make your task a lot easier.
