Plus the pic doesn't show the starter end of the cable. I wonder if it might be shorting in debris, or to the block, ersumthin.

Plus, with sauch a messed up wiring nest as that, I'll bet the + cable that goes to the battery has a clamp-on end att he bqattery. Loaded with corrosion. Put a new + cable on, and a complete - cable too, and I'll bet it starts lots better.

#3 is your voltage reg.
