I'm not one for closing immigration into the US, but I do support controlled immigration. Living in the San Joaquin valley, seasonal work sucks; wages are crap, its hot dirt work (I’ve picked grapes) and I don’t believe there are many US citizens that are willing to do that kind of work for the wages paid. Granted, illegal aliens find their way into a lot of jobs besides farm labor, but they are the jobs most of us just don’t want to do. If the process for obtaining a work visa were made fairly easy to include background checks w/Mexican authorities, we would have more personal information captured on those entering for future use, if needed, while minimizing the illegal crossing to those with criminal backgrounds.
So here is the dilemma. Farming in this country is BIG business and it’s heard loud in Washington. Constituents also scream “NO MORE TAXES,” and I’m not going to pay a lot for that tomato!
So which us are willing to close the boarders and hit the fields?
