biodiesel is the answer. big biz doesn't like it because it is relatively so easy to make svo & biodiesel almost anyone can do it. the process of making ethanol is more complicated, has higher barriers to entry and favors corn producing regions. since it is blended with gas, they get to keep you on the petro teet longer too. diesel cars and truck are more efficient, are easier to maintain, have less parts and have longer useful lives- pluses to the users - negatives to the producers. we are smart enough to create highly efficient vehicles, but if there is no annuity built in for the businesses they drag their feet. its like curing the common cold or cancer , it likely can be done, but if you sold billons of dollars of medicine per year how hard would you try??
