Optima's, do not gas out, they last nearly 10 years, many of them in "week-end vehicles" that seldom get driven.
I've had at least 6 of them, in 4 different vehicles and a trailer and I've never had to worry about them.
I can say that a gel cell requires a different type of battery charger, so you may have ruined them by trying to charge them with a conventional charger (in reference to the "won't take charges" comment)
