Two books to satisfy your curiosity
The Internal-Combustion Engine in Theory and Practice, Volume 1, Thermodynamics, Fluid Flow, Performance - Second Edition
The Internal-Combustion Engine in Theory and Practice, Volume 2, Combustion, Fuels, Materials, Design - revised edition
Both of these texts are by Charles Fayette Taylor who designed the engine for Charles Lindbergs "Spirit of St. Louis" and who was Director of the Sloan Labratory for aircraft and automotive engineering at MIT from 1929 to 1960. He passed away in 1996 at the age of 102.
Reprints of the text are available from MIT press as well as being listed on ebay from time to time.
The math can be daunting, but the explanations are first rate and very accessible, even to the layman.
I belive that you can even view extensive extracts on Amazon.com or through Google as well.
