C = "combined" set (the first ones that did not have a separate ringer box and voice coil. (the model 302, for instance)
CV = Combined "varistor" The varistor is a variable resitor whose resitance decreases, as voltage across it increases. It is used to limit acoustic shock (clicks in the ear) as the phone is taken off-hook, and during rotary dialing pulses. The varistor is the little resistor-looking thingie wired across the receiver unit in a conventional (G-type) handset.
