I left mine just a scosh short in front. That way the water will drain past the front of the boards, then down between them/under the strips. I figured 1/4" will allow me to clean the debris out as it builds up. Debris will hold water and lead to the three 'R's- Rust, Rot, & Rebuilding.
It might be a good idea to assemble the bed upside down, before paint. It was a sticking point for me to get the outer boards to fit right. Building it onto the frame meant r&r'ing the sides too many times with fresh, soft paint, necessitating touch up later.
