I would like to put my 2 cents in on this 3208. I have one in a 79 Ford L8000 and had the crank break on the original. This is in my boom truck so no heavy hauling is ever done with it. I had a CAT remanned 3208 installed to the tune of $11,000. It burned oil from day one so I took it back to the dealer. They had me chart the oil usage for several weeks in which time it lost a quart every 100 miles. After fighting with the CAT rep who thoughly pissed me off the dealer pulled the motor apart. With this being a two ring piston motor it had two pistons with broken ring grooves. So with two new pistons it still burns/loses oil but being out of warrenty it's to bad so sad from CAT. Now in the last two times I've had it out it developed a severe oil leak. I took to a diesel shop and today they told me the gasket is leaking between the block, pan and bellhousing, I thought it was the rear main seal which is getting replaced too. On top of all everything else this is THE loudest engine I've ever owned. It has a proper muffler and exhaust but the cab noise is such that I wear hearing protection when running down the road. I will NEVER own another 3208 CAT, as far as I'm concerned they are JUNK. They are a throw away motor that should be thrown away from the start. Yes I read the other posts about some having better luck but if it were me I'd look at another engine than a CAT 3208.
