You're right, we did not remove the pinion gear. I may have mispoke. I believe what we did is properly known as pre-seating the bearings or setting the bearing pre-load.
Rather than mark the side bearing retainers prior to disassembly, we went through a trial and error process to find the point at which the ring and pinion would spin throughout with about .007" of slack before the pinion engaged the ring. If I understand your advice, by marking the retainers before hand we could have lessened the amount of trial and error involved. I can't imagine not needing to measure the final result with a micrometer, but I'm new at this aspect.
All in all, I believe we achieved a good result. Joel will have to give us a status report after he drives the truck some more. This week he is headed to the body shop for new paint!
