When I first moved into my house the garage had an overhead lumber rack that was full of rotten wood, old half-sheets of 1/4-inch plywood, and a lot of rat poop all over everything. One day I was cleaning it all out, throwing it in the trailer to take to the dump. I was up on a ladder, and threw something behind me to see a cardboard box maybe 3" high, kind of a big flat box, in there with all the lumber. Right in front of me was a chewed doorway, an arch just like the mouse holes in Tom & Jerry cartoons. I looked at it, about 1-2 feet in front of me, and just then a rat poked its head out, clearly freaked out, and it dove right over my head, squeaking, spread-eagled. I swear it looked me right in the eye and almost caught my hair as it flew over my head. Scared the living hell out of me. It's the only time in my life I've actually screamed, and I fell off the ladder. Luckily nobody was there to witness it, and other than being dumb enough to post the story on the internet just now so the whole world can read it forever, nobody knows about it :)
