from my reading the charcoal is not completely burned, leaving gases for the engine to run on when used. the burner is designed to burn the fuel enough to release the gases but not enough to burn completely. i wanted to use a pellet stove for a conversion but they burn so completely, that there is nothing left for the engine. in the instruction manual published but the us department of agriculture on how to convert a farm tractor, the way the burn is checked is to open a port on the burner and insert a flame to test for a whump of gas. once you are producing the gas, you start the engine and go. they use a blower motor to fan the fire. most of this stuff is homebrew and low tech and seemingly requires a lot of fiddling to get going. the burner depends on road bumps to 'shake' the fire. i have a pdf version of the manual
