I think it will depend on your intended use. If you are thinking of solely using it to mount your rear winch, then I think above the crossmember will be fine. If you are also looking at pulling a trailer then you can get a ball hitch with a pretty radical drop. Or as was also mentioned, there are adjustable ones.
