For sealing bolts that go into through holes, I've switched to using teflon pipe dope (not the tape, but the goop in a bottle with a brush). It's made to seal threads and I find it's more reliable than silicone on bolts and studs. Silicone should be used for flat surfaces. One danger with silicone, is that it will extrude out both sides of the joint, and the stuff on the inside is liable to come of in large lumps. It's important not to use too much, but I won't use it at all if a lump coming off on the inside would clog up something important like an oil passage. Non-hardening sealers and pipe dope done have this risk.
