Possibly a lot of things, but rather than shotgunning it, I prefer to test and figure out what's actually wrong before I spend money swapping parts. A bad coil / weak spark could cause exhaust backfires, but not intake backfires. Could even be that it's running too rich, though he didn't say anything about black smoke.
