Those of us who grew up in the 50's heard and saw repeated the phrase "Arsenal of Democracy"--a pre-war and WWII slogan to describe this country.
Erwin Rommel knew that if the US and her allies were not stopped on the beachs of Normandy, superior tactics and maneuver would not allow the Vehrmacht to survive. Every inferior Sherman they knocked out, would be replaced with two more. On every front, when they could be delivered, our manufactures replaced battle losses in record time.
My young adolescent students today will tell you in a heartbeat that "EVERYTHING is made in China!"
You are right, we don't just have our pants down, we are naked and exposed to all potential enemies.
