NP 540 D transmission

I have a 1964 W-300 with a NP420, I have located a NP540 D with bell housing from a D-500 for a good price. Any input on the swap to include advantages or disadvantages?

Are there different NP 540's. My book only shows a 540 and a540 with a short fourth gear.

Any info would be great before I starty the project
