Last Sat. I towed my horse trailer to the usual field where I play
polocrosse. The paddock where I intended to park looked dry from a distance.
Those weeds were just high enough to conceal the 6 inches of standing water.
The old W500 was wearing street tires and I got that sinking feeling from the back
end as I drove out on the field. Confidently, I stepped out, flicked the hubs in,
put it in 4x high and managed to pull forward
another 50 feet. Realizing my dilemna, I quickly backed up, turned to the right and
headed for higher ground. Another 50 feet and no movement.
OK. Some options:
1) get the 2 horses out of the trailer and try again.
2) remove the trailer and try, but then how do I get the trailer?
3) I was now pointing directly at a tree on the fence line about 150' away. Winch it out.
Taking the horses out was of no help.
I just had enough 1/2" cable on the MU2 to reach the tree. Threw it in low range, 1st gear,
engaged the winch and just relaxed as the huge truck and horse trailer (no horses but I doubt that
2000 extra pounds would have mattered) slowly walked out of
the mire. It's impressive what this little winch will do. All without laptop or cell phone.
I don't know if this qualifies as an "old-time" experience but it felt real enough at the time.
You could buy quite a few Guiness Stouts for the tow truck charge to pull that rig out.
