Some will not agree:
A POWER WAGON is still a POWER WAGON even if it is not in the condition that it came out of the factory in. Modifications can add to a vehicle if done well.
Modification to a PW are great and can be quite individualistic. Some were altered to make better work trucks. Springs were added, tow truck or fire bodies were added and crew cabs were made and most of you would say that they are still PWs. I consider the woodies a great truck especially George's.
Certain parts are getting very hard to find such a good brake drums and people are switching to disks which is not cheap but adds a good safety margin and puts a truck back on the road. I have no problems with dual master cylinders being added for safety reasons. Putting in different gear ratios or lockers is fine. Putting in a V8 and different trans (Hopefully a Dodge product) is an upgrade that many do and it is still a PW.
Where I tend to draw the line is when someone rips the drive line and axles and etc out of a perfectly good and running truck. That hurts and a piece of history is destroyed. That is why I will not modify my 51 ffPW beyond a few safety improvements. What is even worse is when someone takes the body off and put it on a new frame and running gear. Yes it is a PW body but it is not really what it once was.
However, there are some people out there, Paul in NY for example, who have taken a totally rusted and gutted body and frame and put together a beautiful truck from a real wreck. I would rather see some of these basket cases be modified and modernized than end up in the crusher. Paul for example has a very unique truck that is loved by many people and dang it it has a BT4 in it.
