My vegetarian goat farming friend is dead. He didn't need or want any excuse to kill anything. He saw enough killing in Vietnam. After the war, he moved up into the hills with his lady and they had a real good homestead going. They stuck it out long after most of the back-to-the-landers got tired of hard work, dry summers and cold winters. He grew his own food, raised his own meat, made home-made electricity in every way you could think of, and built a wonderful barn/shop out of locally-grown lumber. He had almost finished his second house on his place, digging every shovel full of dirt and moving every rock by hand, when he got lymphoma, probably from getting sprayed with agent orange in 'nam.
No, I guess he wasn't a real "meat-eater", by your definition. On the other hand, I don't know anybody who eats cougar. This guy would even eat a house cat, if he had to kill one for some reason, just because he though you should never waste an animal. He'd kill a deer or goat for meat, but no, he didn't get any joy out of killing. Like I said, he'd seen enough in the war, and the war eventually killed him, just 30 years later. You could call him a pacifist and he wouldn't dispute you, but I think the world would be better off with more men like him. He knew how to build things and he knew how to get along with people. His life didn't turn out quite the way he hoped, but he didn't hurt anyone, he helped anyone who needed anything, and he had some fun along the way. I don't think that's such a bad way to live.
