I think you've nailed it...
Here's why, if it was the rear main seal it would be leaking all of the time regardless of incline.
The rear main is a pressure seal and as long as the engine was running with oil pressure, it would be leaking.
The pan gasket on the other hand would cause the symptoms you describe going up an incline...
