I always had a soft spot for the Hondas. I guess it was because an Elsinore was the first bike I had. The Yamaha monoshockers definately were a better fit for me. It was easy for me to ride standing with my weight over the rear fender. Imagine my suprise when I switched to the Maico and had to ride it with my weight over the gas tank. I found that I could square off my corners with it inside of faster guys on Yamahas!
I had one of the first commercially available Fox Monoshocks on my '77 YZ. That, and a Crossup alumininum swingarm gave me about 2-inches more of suspension travel at the rear. I just slid the front forks down in the triple clamps to match. That, and I started my trademark of putting white finders on my yellow Yamahas, got me my racing nickname of "Trick".
I rode a Yamaha thumper at the Vintage Rally a few years ago. It was my first time back on a bike of any kind in over 20 years. It was a YZ425 I believe. I couldn't help but ride it like a two-stroke as That is all I had ever ridden. I could not get used power right off idle. Definately fast!
