I've always heard its the 3 points of the drivetrain be it a ship, or power wagon. As I understood it, it was to differentiate from a direct drive propulsion system common in some boat forms (for instance WW2 subs where the electric input was varied to increase/decrease speed of the wheel) or like some tractors. Thats what I've been told, but who knows how accurate it is or whether its just another old sea tale.
Point #1 - Power plant (Engine)
Point #2 - Propulsion system (Transmission and gearing)
Point #3 - Propulsion engagement (the prop/wheel in a ship or the diff/axle in a truck)
