Most likely there are more French Speaking citizens in North America than there are in France, but the last time that Americans were in France, in a large tour group, we only wanted the directions to Berlin....
My first American Ancestor, was trained at Valley Forge, by General Lafayette, they seemed to understand each other just fine...
