I basically did the same thing using a Come-along hand winch....
Braced the tire against something sturdy; my bumper. Attached one hook to the bumper and ran the cable-end inside through the tire around the run-flat and out the other side. Then, placed the cable-end hook on the opposite side and started winching. When the run-flat was compressed enough to get safely clear of the tire, I started sawing in two (Sawzall would have been really quick at the time).
It's a battle to say the least, but the tire weighs a whole lot less once your done.
