What are the symptoms of a bad ignition coil?

Sometimes my truck will start,sometimes it won't. when it starts,it sometimes stalls and refuses to re-start. The ballast resistor gets pretty hot,the coil tower sparks down to the small nut that holds down the wire connection of the wire that goes down to the distributor. Can anybody help? Experianced this before? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
