Army First Sergeant(1SG/E-8)= 3 up, 3 down, diamond in the middle. Assigned at company/battery level.
Army Sergeant Major(SGM/E-9)= 3 up, 3 down, star in the middle. Generally assigned to staff billets.
Army Command Sergeant Major(CSM/E-9)= 3 up, 3 down, star in the middle with a wreath around the star. Assigned at Battalion command and higher.
It can be difficult to differentiate between the small 1SG and SGM/CSM rank insignia on BDUs/ACUs, especially with sewn on rank. But is always best to err on the up side and call a 1SG a SGM than to call a SGM a 1SG! DAMHIK...:-(
