Tuned induction often employs Helmholtz resonance to achieve a ram effect which can have a significant effect on VE in a very narrow RPM band.
Some engines like the one in my BMW have variable intake geometry. The effective length of the intake runners can be altered in proportion to engine speed, giving a broader, flatter torque curve.
I've often wished that an American car company would use a Lysholm Compressor and "Miller Cycle" on a 5.0L or larger engine.
