I was wondering why I, and so many others, had not heard of the “Opt-Out” subject talked about in the Verizon thread below. So I had Martie ask at the phone company where she works. This is a small locally owned telephone company that serves about 500 people. The company has a total of 7 employees and 3 of those are part time.
It seems that there is a time period to meet compliance with the Federal laws, and the deadline has not yet arrived. Within a month or so, we will be receiving “Opt-Out” instructions like those seen from Verizon, even though our phone company has no affiliates, agents, or parent companies and/or their subsidiaries to share information with. We have our own long distance service so AT&T, MCI, Sprint, etc. are regarded as competitors so we would not be sharing information with them anyway. Everything here is kept quite. All the stockholders are neighbors of mine (my Mom even owns stock) and we know the Board of Director members personally.
So, this could explain why these new rules have come as a surprise to others as well.
