easiest way to clean big parts

What's the easiest way to clean parts? Should I rent a steam cleaner? Won't this spray grease everywhere making post cleanup more difficult?

Solvent and a brush seem okay, but how do you clean those nooks and crannies and inside places the brush can't reach? Then what do you do with the solvent and gunk afterwards?

Currently I'm out of clever ideas for cleaning the inside of the rear axle. Any help for motivation to tackle the bigger cleaning projects (axle, tranny, engine) appreciated.
