Wiring up a Delco 3 wire SI alternator?

A question on wiring up a Delco 2 wire SI alternator... ( Im going to 12 volt neg ground). I know that the Bat. wires goes to the alternator but there is the plug wire in the center. I read that it should be attached to a LED (diod) then to the ignition. This is to prevent voltage leakage!? Question- where do I get one of these diods, how do I attach it, how do I run a wire from it to ignition switch.
Any clearification appreciated.
