worked as I mentioned before I took them apart for cleaning and worked the same on install. Maybe, just maybe, it was a designed in safety thing. You could not hook a coat or pull the door handle open by accident going thru rough territory, bouncing etc. Something like the door lock was on the sidewalk side so you would not gat hit locking the doors ????
