One afternoon 2 weeks ago I was driving home from work and in the distance I saw a plane flying low and slow. Larger than a Cessna, and lower and slower than any commercial traffic, I figured it had to be vintage. It was far away, but I swore it was the unmistakeable silouette of a B17 with it's large stablizer. Then it ducked behind a hill and I never saw it again, so I couldn't be sure. The very next afternoon in the same place, I saw another plane, again low and slow, but this time with the silouette of B24. This one turned parallel to my direction so I was able to see the twin stablizers, so I knew it was a B24, which confirmed to me that I did see a B17 the day before. Later I find out about a family day at one of the local ANG bases. Not being ANG family, I couldn't go see them. But I have been on both during past visits. My father-in-law has 22 missions as a gunner/radio on B24. 15th? Air Force out of Italy. Gotta love the old iron, I mean aluminum.
