Yes, correct. But is ONE INCH going to make any difference? That equates to each rear tire being only 1/2" more outboard when they run in the front tires track. I hardly think that makes a difference.
What prompted me to measure this were articles by Army Motors, Popular Science and others from both that era and modern publications saying that the rear axle was "several inches narrower" than the front axle. I hardly think one inch qualifies as "several inches". I measured it on two chassis and found this to not be true. I can only surmise that someone measured a 41 WC with dual rear wheels and came to the wrong conclusion. In that case, yes, the front wheels will be a lot narrower. I was debating about running 7.50x16 dualies on the back or going to 900x16 all the way around. Still have not decided, but measuring the track was part of the decision process, and I tripped up this long standing myth.
