Might not work....problem is the power / voltage goes to the guage and then earths through the tank sender unit. If you use a voltage dropper as the input to the guage it will give the gauge 6 v, which is fine ..... but if you are still using the original 12 v tank sender it will get only half the voltage (6v)and give you half the deflection / reading value...
Bottom line would be 12 v sender AND gauge, or 6v sender AND gauge with a dropper resistor.
It might be worth trying the guage on 12v matched to a loose sender unit and seeing how far off it is. I've looked at this a few times and the original gauge accuracy wasn't that hot anyway.
