Here is a simple idea to prevent your garage door spring from flying around your garage
and hitting you or your prized posessions.
Run an 1/8 Cable through the garage door spring when the door is in the up position. Weave a few inches of the
cable though a few holes in the brackets that support the door tracks. Put the other end of the cable
through the hole that is on the pulley and close the door. Again, weave a few inches of the cable through the holes in the brackets.
I put the cable through 3 holes and pulled it tight so it stays in place due to friction. The section of the cable
that runs through the spring has a little slack- it does not have to be pulled tight. This method allows you to secure
the cable without any hardware.
I used 7'6" lengths of cable, and it took a few minutes for each door. The total cost was under $8.00 for three doors.
I would not want to be in the garage when a spring breaks if the cables were not in place.
