Flywhee woes

I may have made a big blunder in reassemby of my truck- I did not realize that the ring gear on the flywheel of the 230 engine has fewer teeth than for the ring gear of the 251 when I replaced the original 230 engine with a 251ci engine. Since I am using the old bellhousing (230) as I am using the 2nd series transmission, I assumed I could use the 251 engine I purchased in place of the original engine in my B4 and The old starter, which has two bolts to 230 bell housing Im using. (250 starter has 3 mounting bolts) But this starter pinion will not work with the 251 ring gear! I guess I have to pull the gearbox, clutch and flywheel and replace the 251 flywheel with the 230 flywheel. On the bright side- I failed to replace the pilot bearing or resurface the flywheel which I will do.

Also a quick question. How do I make sure that the shifting forks in the tranny top are correctly positioned when mating to the gearbox. In other words where should the gears be and the shifter be when the come together?

Thanx.G
