Things have had to really loosen up in order to shear studs, loose nuts, and for that thrust pad to fall out of place. Why things became that loose, you may never know, but now you have bigger problems. Even if the gear teeth survived all of that shrapnel floating around, the truck was driven with the ring gear loosened and the tooth contact with the pinion gear had to become way off. The gear teeth now probably have some really weird wear patterns on them and I would expect that the tooth contact could never be properly set again.
