it goes opposite the fill plug. It keeps the ring gear from pushing away from the pinion gear. It is a critical part that must be in there. I would take it apart, inspect all teeth and bearings for damage, if good replace ALL the studs and locks on the ring gear, install new thrust block correctly, check pinion set up.
