Such a simple question, but not such a simple answer.
You say the truck has been "converted" from 6 to 12 volts.
Who did the conversion? You? An automotive electrical shop?
Was the generator replaced with an alternator?
Is the alternator the kind with the integral (built-in) regulator?
Is the ammeter wired into the truck properly? Generally, one-wire alternator installations do not use an ammeter, they use a voltmeter.
We need lots more info to be able to help.
