the rubber tire carries the load. proper inflation maintains a safe temperature inside the rubber tire ( allowing the tires to maintain a near perfect designed shape... that is based on load) which allows maximum life span.
you can run at a decreased air pressure at decreased speeds with little to no adverse wear on the tires. for instance 15psi at say 5mph, wont really harm much.
under-inflated tires on the interstate allow the build up of heat, which in turn causes premature, and sometimes catastrophic, tire failure.
im not an engineer, not a lawyer and dont make tires. i did attend a traffic accident investigation college course, and am capable of reconstructing them.
