Personally, I have always leaned towards the individual camp. IMHO, when people yearn to be part of a group, that's when the trouble starts. As far as the two philosophies of economics thought, well, that's an over simplified thought/comment, and requires MUCH more in depth discussion.
Life has always been (& will always be) them that have & them that don't. Then ya have them that want to be in control of everything, and others willing to go with the flow. Capitalism IS a good thing but can easily run amuck. Look at the Industrial Revoultion.
Good things came of it, but some real bad things too. Child labor, sweatshops, unsafe working conditions, rivers catching fire, rampant disease. Again, why & how did big government get to be big government?
I had once read a comment about how good it would be if capitalism were left to run unchecked, all kinds of wonderful things would happen to people just for the simple reason of it being good for business. That sounds great BUT, read the above paragraph again. That was capitalism unchecked.
Anywho, this is to deep a thing to get into here, and requires personal communication (especially since I can't type for crap). A blanket statement of "Capitalism = Good & Socialism = Bad" is an erroneous statement. Some socialistic ideas are good (read as SOME). If ya want to put blame somewhere (besides us for allowing this crap to happen), blame the powers that be for wanting to continue to be the powers that be (although I really can't blame em for that).
Now as for your thought (in the past) about the Cult/Commune/Retirement Village being in the southwest, bad choice. Not enough fresh water. Oh well, have a good one Nammy. See ya at Cheers. HA!
