Most overdrives use a planetary gear set. It is controlled by bands, either electrically, or hydraulically. The use of bands is probably why it won't work well in reverse- they ares somewhat self-actuating in forward, but no s-a in reverse. Clutch packs and sliding gears would probably not have probs in reverse.
