Where did the 1958 TW come from?

For the most part the replacement engines have a blank number pad, at least the ones I have seen are blank. I wonder if the state stamped the numbers as the engine was replaced.

Is your 58 PW TW an early truck without a VIN tag on the door jamb? If so maybe that is why the engine got stamped if that is a state issued number.
