You should be able to talk the DMV clerk into doing a 'title only' transfer. None of the expensive registration fees, only sales tax and about $15 for 'title transfer'.

I don't know if this option is good in other states.

I've heard of people that lie about the sales price, to save on sales tax. "Of course it's only worth $300. It is THIRTY years old." Or so I've heard.
