From the net, Dodge likes crushables. This makes sense, since tightening the nut wouldn't do much to a solid shim system. As a frinstace, it wouldn't tighten up worn bearings. But overtightening it would sure cause grief in a crushable system. Also, I'm sure most of the diffs I did were Dodges, motor homes and power wagons, so id crushables are in my mind...
I have also re-used crushable sleeves by adding a shim under the bearing, thereby getting to crush the sleeve just a little bit. You might be able to do this without a complete tear down of the diff, if you can get the bearing out. Then you can also check to be sure it is a crushable, because there will be an outer 'ring' around the shoulder, (D) in that view. You'll need a new seal again.
I THINK the proper way to set preload on a crushable is to tighten the nut to zero lash, then go X many degrees further to set the proper preload. But it has been 25 years since I did one. I don't think I have a Motors Light Truck book now.
