Te V-6 has more torque and horsepower, but not off idle where a Jeep needs it.
However they have engineered a feature that is pretty cool. When you shift into low range, this triggers the computer to change the engine AND transmission, performance parameters, actually retuning the motor to develop low rpm torque and recalibrating the transmission shift points so that it "feels" more powerful and performs better at low speeds.
I too still miss the 4.2 and the smaller 4.0, but the fuel economy and emission regulation could no longer be met by a low reving in-line 6. To meet the most stringent requirements you have to have a high reving motor that burns the fuel more completely.
The 2.8 Detroit Diesel solved all of those issues until the ULSD mandate. It will be a few years before smaller clean diesels met the new requirements.
