Yesterday my M37 started acting like it was leaning out while driving down the highway on a 90 degree plus day. It would pop out the exhaust and loose power. If I let it idle for a few moments - all seemed well for about 20 seconds and then the problems repeated. The interval for the problem going away while traveling home got shorter and shorter.
Once home, I popped the hood - and saw the gas in the fuel filter between the mechanical f/p and carb was boiling. Also, the spark plug porcelains were too clean/white for normal running. BTW: The engine does have its heat sheild.
It seemed like it was time to install my 24v 4psi elect fuel pump to help stop the vapor lock issue.
I left the original f/p in place to run the wipers.
Now the idle is at least 2500 and no, the linkage is not stuck. Also, the elect f/p is not forcing gas into the engine as the problem continued even after I disconnected it - the engine idled high until it suddenly ran out of gas. It the elect f/p was not the culprit, as the idle would have dropped as the fuel pressure eased off the carb.
Any ideas on what the problem is? Help - I would like it for parade use tomorrow! Thanks.
