I have to go with Paul on this. Considering even the methane escaping from a manhole cover could set up a runaway condition. The Jake isn't up to the task and probably wouldn't do the job. Something else to consider , I presume you occasionally have to draft to fill your tender. If you are drawing water from a stagnant source or something with farm run-off, you could dislodge a pocket of methane and be in a situation real quick.
I personally like the McKenzie shut-off. You can buy a controller that senses overspeed and shuts down the engine at a set rpm. I bought the manual shutdown unit myself.
